Empowering Change at Kings High School: A Journey of Community Impact and Growth

September 1 , 2023 | Written by Branden Waggoner

At Magnified Giving, we aim to inspire young minds to become compassionate change-makers. The impact of our Youth Philanthropy Program is seen not only in the numbers, but also felt in the hearts of students, as exemplified by our recent collaboration with Kings High School. As a public school, Kings High School's participation highlights the universal nature of philanthropy and the transformative potential it holds for all students.

In the 2022-2023 school year, 24 students from Kings High School embraced the philanthropic journey. Through open group discussions, they identified social cause categories close to their hearts. This process cultivated self-awareness and nurtured relationships as students shared perspectives on things that matter most to them.

Drawing on the lessons of empathy and understanding, these young philanthropists dove into researching five different nonprofit agencies. A standout practice within the program was the exploration of finances, shedding light on the complexities of nonprofit financial management. This exposure provided a practical perspective on the intricacies of philanthropy, enriching students' responsible decision-making skills.

Students from Kings High School presented at a virtual Grant Giving Ceremony, hosted by Magnified Giving in April, where they awarded grants to Buddy Up For Life and Joshua’s Place.

Collaboration and connection were the tone of the program as students cross-educated each other about their chosen social causes and agencies. Through conference calls, they forged relationships with the nonprofits.

The impact extended beyond the classroom walls, as students devoted 75 hours to volunteering, a testament to their dedication and sense of responsibility. Advocacy and responsible decision-making emerged through partner presentations and a thoughtful voting process. In the end, Kings High School students chose to grant $1,000 to Buddy Up For Life and $500 to Joshua’s Place. Founded in 2008 in a South Lebanon basement, Joshua’s Place has grown into a powerful force for good, serving hundreds of families each month. With a relational approach to service, they prioritize tackling the root causes of poverty, fostering personal engagement, and promoting recovery.  This resonated with the students on a personal level, reminding us that the power of philanthropy often stems from personal connections.

Keren Palaparty, recipient of Roger Grein Spirit of Philanthropy Recognition for the 2022-2023 school year.

Among the students who participated in the program at Kings High School, Keren Palaparty stands as a shining example of the value of youth philanthropy for developing new skills and building meaningful community relationships. Keren's reflection on her journey with Magnified Giving and Joshua’s Place encapsulates the essence of her journey. She says:

"Along with developing leadership skills by creating a presentation for Magnified Giving, I was able to collaborate with Supporter Relations Director, Jackie Price. In particular, the development of social awareness and empathy was vital to coordinating with the two Magnified Giving sponsors we had chosen this year. I am particularly connected with the organization as it continues to provide and impact the lives of individuals. Joshua’s Place assures the faith in confidence to hope for the betterment of our local communities."

Keren's journey illustrates the potential of young people to create positive change through their passion, commitment, and compassionate actions. Keren was able to develop a deep connection with a local nonprofit in the area, and we hope the relationship will flourish in the future. In recognition of her devotion to service and commitment to personal grown, Keren is one of 18 youth who earned the Roger Grein Spirit of Philanthropy Award this school year.
