Fostering a Culture of Service in Our Community

Providing training and resources to infuse our region with service-learning and provide spaces for meaningful reflection and conversations about service.

What is Service-Learning?

Service-learning is an approach to teaching and learning in which students use academic and civic knowledge and skills to address genuine community needs while achieving academic standards. We offer training and resources on this educational approach not only to Magnified Giving teachers, but to all educators and families in our region, because we know that this approach leads to greater engagement in service and problem-solving!

In 2018, the Mayerson Foundation passed on elements of their transformative Mayerson Service-Learning Program to Magnified Giving in order to continue the meaningful role of providing service-learning resources to teachers and community members. We are honored to continue this critical work to keep our community engaged in service, and we are thankful to be part of The Mayerson Foundation’s legacy of successful empowerment through service-learning.

Service-Learning Programs and Resources

Annual Student Service Conference

This day-long workshop brings students, teachers, and nonprofits together to inspire an active school year of service-learning and deep impact within the community. Students learn about the needs of local nonprofits and have the opportunity to develop projects that meet those needs.

Student Service Challenge

We challenge students to take real action in their communities, and we offer funding to support their projects through the Student Service Challenge. To receive funding for their service projects, students work through the IPARD (Investigate, Plan, take Action, Reflect, and Demonstrate) methodology of service-learning to create a project and presentation.

One-on-One Consultation

We work with schools and teachers to help them utilize the service-learning methodology. We help teachers integrate service into their curriculum for the first time and go deeper once this service-learning is established. We connect teachers with nonprofit partners to provide their students with meaningful opportunities for deep community impact.

Summer Service Program

We partner with St. Vincent DePaul Ozanam Center to provide a unique and memorable summertime opportunity for students and teachers from diverse local schools to immerse themselves in a week of service-learning within our community.

Giving Circles

Service-Learning Teacher Workshop

We work with groups of all kinds - including families, college classes, community groups, donors, teachers, youth, or alumni - to facilitate meaningful conversation about community, causes, and nonprofits through a Giving Circle. During a typical 1-2 hour Giving Circle, each participant shares about a nonprofit that they care about, and the group works together to select a nonprofit to receive a Magnified Giving grant or funds raised by the group.

To support increased service-learning action in our community, Magnified Giving hosted a Service-Learning workshop offered at no cost to educators. We brought in national expert Julie Rogers Bascom, Director of Learning and Leadership at National Youth Leadership Council, to faciliate. The event was sponsored by The Mayerson Foundation, and over 60 educators attended. Read more about how this event inspired educators in their service-learning practice here.
